Review by rediff:Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster

Borrowing liberally from the Shakespearean tragedy Macbeth, Tigmanshu Dhulia's Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster owes more to Vishal Bhardwaj's Maqbool than Guru Dutt's Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam. It tries to be both, balancing its personal homage spirit with a gripping tale of intricate politics, love and betrayal set against a decadent royalty that's rapidly losing touch with the realities of modern-day existence. It's fascinating to see how Dhulia doesn't succumb to the idea of doing this as an expose film on the hypocrisy that breeds within royal mansions; neither does he develop the crime angle, a move that partially subverts this film's obvious direction towards the crime genre. Instead, he plays it straight with single-minded focus on the development of his characters and the impact they would have on the plot.

Dhulia lacks the stylistic qualities of Bhardwaj and Anurag Kashyap, both directors from small-town India like him. On the surface, you may be tempted to ally Dhulia's themes with those of Kashyap and Bhardwaj's but the director of films like Haasil and Charas truly belongs to the line of filmmaking that someone like Sudhir Mishra represents. That's why when you see a ruthlessly ambitious Babloo (Randeep Hooda ) rising through the ranks, you know the real influence for this character is Shiney Ahuja's Vikram in Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi and not Irrfan Khan's Miyan Maqbool in Maqbool. There's also a bit of Gulaal here, Anurag Kashyap's finest film yet, in which he looks at the royalty with contempt. Kashyap doesn't do a Bunuel in Gulaal; Bunuel was charmed enough by the bourgeois to take gentle digs at them, while Kashyap sears through their charade. Dhulia adopts the same apparatus in Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster. His saheb (Jimmy Shergill ) begs with his step-mother for whatever little scrap he could partake. Those in the inner circles know that the glorified story of these opulent mansions where milk and honey flows is untrue. Saheb wishes to enter politics because it would help him retain his respect and save him from abject penury. His feisty wife (Mahie Gill as Chhoti Rani) is neglected but she is in no way the coy and faithful Chhoti Bahu from Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam. In fact, Chhoti Rani and Chhoti Bahu represent two opposite ends of the spectrum, a contrast that symbolises the changing social position of women in royal families. When Saheb tells her he's travelling to the city and if she needs anything, she shoots back mockingly, "Bring me back my nights if you can." Chhoti Bahu wouldn't do that with such stridence even in her dream.

Dhulia shapes the character of Babloo (Hooda) as an outsider, who is scorned by his lover for being too "cheap." He suffers the same fate at the hands of Chhoti Rani. Betrayed by Chhoti Rani, he loses self-respect, power, money and a small chance at true love (Saheb at one point suggests he marry Deepal Shaw , daughter of his trusted aide). When Babloo arrives at the mansion, he becomes privy to its loss of glory. He knows there's a lot he can do here. This loss of glory forms the paradox for his own defeat, a tragic consequence he hadn't accounted for. Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster is made with the production values of the 90s. Such films ought to create a sense of mystique, if not larger-than-lifeness. Maqbool was classy because Bhardwaj made excellent use of mood and setting, and took his time to introduce elements into the plot. It must be pointed out that Bhardwaj had Gulzar for its music and actors like Pankaj Kapur, Irrfan Khan, Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri .

Dhulia, on the other hand, looks like someone who's operating with bare minimum. However, he uses his actors well. Jimmy Shergill, Randeep Hooda and Mahie Gill fill this film with restless vigour. Dhulia is certainly an under-rated director who seeks inspiration from small-town India and its crime and political scene. If he is to emerge as a key figure in this movement led by Bhardwaj, Kashyap and others, he must make more films like Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster. Better films, one may say.

Rajnikanth in "Ra One" is a rumour.

There are speculations that Super Star Rajinikanth is donning a guest role in Bollywood Baadshah Shahrukh Khan’s highly anticipated movie Ra.One. But, according to our Chennai sources, the super Star is not doing any film right now and his next film Rana will only commence its shoot in November.
It is heard that Rajini is taking rest still and is in no hurry to complete Rana or not doing any guest role as his health is not allowing him to do so. This news comes as a huge setback to the distributors who acquired the rights of Ra.One for astronomical price by assuming huge collections on Rajini's name.
Ra.One is releasing on October 26 as Diwali gift in Hindi, Telugu and Tamil simultaneously in both 2D and 3D formats.

Teja Bhai and Family Review.

Teja Bhai and Family , a romantic comedy film directed by Dipu Karunakaran, starring Prithviraj and Akhila in the lead roles released on Aug 30th, with full packed welcome on theatres. There is nothing new that Dipu Karunakaran's film offers us, and though its fast and loud, there isn't anything special in it that we haven't seen at least a dozen times before.
After catching flicks Urumi, Veetilekulla Vazhi and Manikyakallu Young Superstar Prithviraj arrives this time with a fun entertainer, "Teja Bhai and Family". The plot of the film says 'Teja bhai'(Prithviraj) is the last word in Kuala Lumpur underworld, without notice of Tejabhai,no business will hold on at Kuala Lumpur. Teja bhai ,the underworld don surrenders his heart to a girl named Vedika(Akhila Sasidharan), who is a social worker. But Vedika's father Damodarji wants his daughter to be married to a man with high social status and family heritage. The power of love makes Teja to change the dress of underworld don and he decides to make a good family and for this he flies to Kerala. Teja changes his name to Roshan, and also be friend wid Swami Vashyaa Vajas(Suraj Venjarumoodu). The thread takes hilarious turns with the arrival of Vedika's relatives to join in Teja's family. To be fair Prithviraj's comedy does work in some places but does not have the steam to propel the film to a higher plain. The main culprit for the film is the storyline or the lack of it. It is a kind of patch work on incidents and situations picked up from various films. Prithvi delivers a stylish and whopper performance as per script and underlines the fact that he isn't called talented for nothing. Akhila Sasidharan had nothing to do big, just point out her looks and acts like a charm. Suraaj Venjaramoodu, whose comic capers had started turning stale, elicits quite a few laughs in the film. Jagathy and Jagdish are good. Performances from other cast Suman, Prem Kumar, Ashokan,Kochu Preman,Indrans, Bindu Paniker, Manju Pillai, Shakeela etc are even. Techinically, direction of Dipu Karunakaran is just average as compared to his last film Crazy Gopalan, and the script nothing deliver more. Cinematography by Shyamdutt, Editing by Manoj and Art by Gokul Das is just normal one. Music of Deepak Dev enriches the film with 'Madhurakinavin Remix', 'Pranayanila..' and the theme music is apt for a entertainer. Overall 'Teja bhai and Family' is a light-hearted film, a no-brainer and can be watched if you are not looking for thought-provoking stuff. Its a movie type of 'dont think too much what is happening !' Now the choice is yours!!!

Bodyguard Movie Review.

After Wanted and Dabangg, Salman Khan is back with yet another release this Eid festive season. His latest movie Bodyguard is his usual masala entertainer film, but director Siddique seems to have grown beyond Salman's limits. The film is sure to rock the family audience with its simple and captivating story.
Taking last two year Eid Count 'Wanted' and 'Dabaang', Salman Khan, ,strikes with another entertainer this Eid with "Bodyguard".
Bodyguard is remake of Malayalam movie with the same name, which is a romantic-action film. Salman Khan's rocking performance is the main attraction of the movie. Rajat Rawail's comedy timings, Himesh Reshammiya and Pritam's music, Sejal Shah's cinematography, Vijayan's action sequences and beautiful costumes and act direction are the other highlights of the film.
The movie Bodyguard has simple and engaging story that is relatable. Nothing much happens in the first half of the film and it runs with a routine Bollywood masala. But the movie turns serious with a twist at the end of the first half. Siddique has shown the best part of the film in the second half. The film has an unexpected twist in the pre-climax, which is completely shocking.
Lovely Singh [Salman Khan] is very punctual and perfect guy in his duties. He is becomes a bodyguard for Divya [Kareena Kapoor], who is the daughter of a business tycoon named Sartaj Rana [Raj Babbar]. He follows her to her college campus, but soon he becomes a menace for her with his over-protective nature. In bid to avoid him, Divya makes up a fake lover, who falls in love with 'private number'. Who is that girl? Is she really in love with him? Will he gets his true love in her? All these questions are answered in the climax.
With Bodyguard, Salman Khan has returned to a genre he started out with love story. He emotes well in sentimental sequences and he surely rocks the viewers in action, music and comedy sequences. Kareena Kapoor has a tailor-made role and she has really used it to show her acting skills. Rajat Rawail provides perfect comedy timings. Aditya Pancholi, Raj Babbar, Mahesh Manjrekar, Hazel Keech, Asrani and Vidya Sinha have delivered their best to suit their respective roles.
Himesh Reshammiya and Pritam's soundtracks are major highlights in the technical front and they fit well with the genre. The title track and 'Teri Meri...' are sure to rock the audience. Sandeep Shirodkar's background score is also good. Sejal Shah's camera work is the other attraction in the technical stuff. Vijayan's stunts are stylish and Sanjay Sankla's editing is also commendable.
Bodyguard should marked as Salman's fourth blockbuster in a row. Go on Sallu Bhai...! Overall, Bodyguard a mass masala treat.
